About

Words hurt

There is an almost uncanny correlation between the number of juries or reviews, and the number of teardrops that roll on cheeks that day. Being a creative teacher myself I’m trying my hardest to be fair, transparent, concise, friendly and helpful to all my students. But, there is always room for improvement.

So, one day I had a really stupid idea:

β€œWhat if I just asked a bunch of questions and let all the answers come from my students? β€œ

And you know what? There was something to that idea …
Us teachers, we sometimes talk and talk and talk, and don’t listen nearly enough.

So then … I had an ever β€˜stupider’ idea:

β€œCan I completely replace myself by these questions?” The first idea that came to mind was building a chat bot. But typing your entire story in a chat didn’t feel very user friendly. Then I dreamt of big, elaborate machines that scan the work you show with a laser grid, before asking you all those questions. Cool for an exhibition, but not entirely practical for daily classroom use. Then, our school got a laser cutter. And I played with the idea of making a big wooden wheel. The wheel became wooden cards. And ultimately: just β€˜cards’. That way, users can add questions themselves. I still liked the idea of making it a low-tech sort of robot, made from school materials.

SO, I started engineering my dream coach
